Designing a photo mug: tips for the perfect image
A photo mug is quickly ordered — but whether it becomes a favorite depends on the image. After countless printed mugs we know pretty precisely what works on ceramic and what doesn't. Here are our tips.
1. The photo: sharpness beats everything
A mug forgives no blurry images. Use the original from your camera or gallery, not the compressed messenger download — the difference is clearly visible on the mug. The same guideline as for paper printing applies: around 300 dpi — in practice, a photo at full smartphone resolution.
2. Bright background, clear hero
On the curved, glossy mug surface, calm images work best: a face, a pet, a clear object. Very dark or busy pictures lose impact on a mug. If you add text: keep it short — a name, a date, one line.
3. Where should the image go?
A detail hardly anyone thinks about: holding the mug in your right hand shows the left side of the mug to others — and vice versa. For right-handers, a single-sided design ideally goes on the side facing the viewer — or you simply choose a wrap-around design or printing on both sides. Just tell us who the mug is for — we'll place the image accordingly.
4. The right mug type for the occasion
- Ceramic mug: the classic for photo prints in top quality — dishwasher-safe and made for everyday use.
- Color-change mug: the image only appears with a hot drink — perfect for surprise gifts.
- Enamel or stainless-steel mug: for outdoor fans and everyone who likes it rugged.

5. Durability: thanks to sublimation
We print mugs using sublimation — the color doesn't sit on the surface, it bonds with the coating. That's why the image stays brilliant through many wash cycles; many of our mugs are dishwasher-safe. We'll tell you what applies to your model.
