Submitting your thesis in Thuringia: what universities require

How many copies? Which binding? Printed, digital or both? What's required when submitting a thesis is decided by each university — and often by each faculty. We've compiled what Thuringia's universities currently require (as of August 2026). One thing first: your examination or doctoral regulations are always what counts. Requirements change and often differ by faculty, institute and program — so definitely clarify the details directly with your examination office before you print.

Bauhaus-Universität Weimar

At the Faculty of Media, the Bachelor's thesis requires three printed and bound copies plus a digital version on a data carrier (CD or USB stick), submitted to the dean's office. The signed declaration of authorship must be firmly bound into every copy — a loose sheet won't do. Other faculties handle details differently; checking your examination office's pages is always worth it.

Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena

A good example of how differently faculties within one university work: at the Faculty of Economics, Bachelor's theses are now submitted digitally only, while Master's theses require three printed, bound copies plus a PDF. Some chairs additionally specify: hardcover, softcover or perfect binding — no ring binding. So check exactly what applies to your program.

Technische Universität Ilmenau

TU Ilmenau's examination regulations (resolution of December 2025) require submission in three bound copies and in electronic form — in a file format that allows machine text extraction, so a searchable PDF is mandatory.

Universität Erfurt

In Erfurt, too, the bound and signed version is what counts as submitted; teacher-training theses must be bound, paginated and include a summary. The number of copies differs by examination regulation — when in doubt, ask the examination office.

Dissertations: the ThULB deposit copies

For doctorates at the University of Jena, the Thuringian University and State Library (ThULB) regulates submission centrally (ThULB checklist, as of May 2026):

• 3 printed copies + an identical electronic version (published in the Digital Library of Thuringia) — or 8 printed copies
• Format DIN A4 or A5, single- or double-sided on standard paper
• Perfect (adhesive) binding is mandatory — ring, velo and clamp bindings are not accepted
• Examination and deposit copies must be identical, including color printing
• The signed declaration of independence belongs firmly bound into every copy

At Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, several faculties require four printed, bound copies plus an electronic version — or three publisher copies if the dissertation appears with a publisher.

What this means for you in practice

1. Regulations first: the number of copies and binding type are in there — don't guess, read. And if anything stays unclear: ask your examination office, faculty or institute directly.
2. Choose the right binding: where ring binding is excluded, perfect binding or hardcover are the right choice — we'll advise you honestly.
3. Have the declaration bound in: bring the signed declaration or include it in your file — we bind it in firmly.
4. Identical copies: all copies from one print run — a given at our shop.
5. Plan ahead: especially for hardcovers and larger runs, the earlier, the calmer.

Once more, because it matters: this overview (as of August 2026) is no substitute for information from your university. Only your current examination or doctoral regulations and your examination office are binding — check there before you have copies printed and bound.
